The Bathtub: A Guide to Choosing the Best Type for Your Bathroom Remodel

When embarking on a bathroom remodel project, homeowners might feel a sense of excitement coupled with anxiety. Gutting an outdated bathroom is a big accomplishment; a literal out with the old, in with the new type of feeling. New fixtures, countertops, flooring and paint? Yes, please. But with all the anticipation of a brand new bathroom comes some anxiety about the process. Everyone has heard horror stories about bathroom remodels gone wrong. That’s why hiring a contractor with expertise in both remodel and design is of benefit to homeowners. At Progressive Builders, we help homeowners make all the right choices for their bathroom remodel, right down to the type of bathtub.

The bathtub? How many choices are possible? We’re glad you asked.

  • Type: There are generally four types of bathtubs: standard, whirlpool, soaking, and walk-in. Standard tubs are your run-of-the-mill tub/shower combos. They are easy to install and clean, and they are a cost-effective option. Whirlpool or air tubs are more expensive, but the luxury of having a spa in your own bathroom might be worth the splurge. Soaking tubs are extra deep and allow the entire body to be submerged in water. A walk-in tub is a great option for those with physical limitations, as climbing in and out of a wet tub can prove to be dangerous.
  • Installation: The four types of tub installation options are alcove, platform, undermount, and freestanding. An alcove installation is what is in most homes: the tub is surrounded by walls on three sides, thus creating its own little nook. A platform installation is for tubs that are made to drop into a deck structure. This is a great option for whirlpool or air tubs, as the plumbing can easily be hidden underneath. An undermount tub is very similar to a platform tub; the only difference is the aesthetics. The undermount area is usually covered in a material such as tile or stone. Lastly, a freestanding tub is just that: freestanding. It stands on its own (think of a claw foot tub) without the support of any decking or walls.
  • Material: Tubs come in all types of materials. The type that’s right for homeowners depends on their budget and personal preferences. Options include acrylic, fiberglass, cultured marble, porcelain, steel, cast iron, and more. Talk to your contractor about the best option for you.
