Mid-Century Modern Home Remodel Ideas

When dreaming up home remodel ideas, it’s easy to go a little overboard with one particular design aesthetic. Whether homeowners prefer farmhouse, industrial, contemporary, or a throwback to the 1950s and 60s, also known as mid-century modern, the beauty is in the details. The idea is certainly not to spend thousands of dollars on a remodel that looks, well….dated. If you watch Mad Men and drool over Don and Megan Draper’s trendy apartment or Henry and Betty Francis’s chic country home, then mid-century modern might be your style. Follow these design tips to blend the mid-century and the modern into a perfect home remodel.

  1. Fine-tune the furniture. What does this mean? Find a few mid-century pieces that will anchor the space. Clean lines, tapered legs, and real wood (none of that pre-fabricated MDF stuff) all speak to the mid-century feel. Avoid furniture that is overstuffed or has scrolls or detailed carving. If you can’t find anything you like at a furniture store, consider hitting up flea markets or thrift stores.
  2. Modernize the kitchen. The mid-century design movement was embraced after WWII by homeowners that wanted to look towards the future, thus everything in their kitchens was meant to be a nod to the future. To replicate the look, keep the kitchen cabinets sleek and straight. Add stainless steel appliances, marble countertops, and cork or laminate flooring. Think clean, simple, and clutter free.
  3. Balance, balance, balance. In order to keep the home looking more modern than mid-century, add black and white accents and geometric patterns. These design pieces modernize a space that has vintage pieces.
  4. Be bright. When we think of the 50s and 60s, we think of orange, gold, yellow, and brown. While incorporating some of those colors into a mid-century home helps keep with the design aesthetic, homeowners can modernize it by adding cool blues or grays to the mix as well. Consider using the colors from the mid-century era as accents only, and paint walls a neutral gray.
