How to Survive a Major Home Remodel

We all know how it starts. You watch a home remodel show on TV and decide that you want—no, need—a new backsplash in your kitchen. While you’re ripping that out you may as well add some more electrical outlets because you’ve always felt the kitchen was lacking in that area. And you know, the new backsplash is going to make the countertop look really dated, so that should be replaced, too. And while you’re at it, go ahead and install the butler’s sink you’ve always wanted. You might as well, right? But what about the bathrooms? If you’ve got a contractor in the house, you may as well start gutting the bathrooms, too.

Home remodeling is a domino effect! You update one thing, and something else looks old and outdated, therefore needing updating itself. A small project suddenly becomes a full-blown renovation.

While very exciting, a project like this can also be very stressful. You know the end product is going to be amazing, but how do you make it there? Here are some tips to help stave off the stress.

  1. Pick Professionals: Research, interview, get quotes in writing, and then maybe research some more. Ask friends and neighbors if they have any general contractors with whom they’ve had good experiences. The last thing anyone wants when their house is torn apart is a flaky or incompetent contractor.
  2. Mull Over Moving Out: A huge home renovation can take months to complete. If at all possible, moving out can save your sanity and keep the family safer during the remodel.
  3. Fairly Functional: Make sure to create a remodel schedule that ensures you always have one fully functional bathroom. As for the kitchen, you might have to get creative with your toaster oven and BBQ.
  4. Save Your Sanity: Get out of the house as much as you can. This is especially important if you have younger children who are not yet in school. The less time you spend in the chaos, the more sane you’ll feel.
  5. Keep it Real: Remember that home renovations almost always take longer than initially expected. Just keep the end goal in mind!
