How to Choose the Right Kitchen Sink for Your Home

With so many things on your kitchen remodel checklist—cabinets, countertops, hardware, flooring, and appliances—it’s easy to forget about the kitchen sink. But the kitchen sink is important! Homeowners should research and shop wisely because once the kitchen sink is installed, it is next to impossible to remove it. When searching for the perfect kitchen sink, keep these three things in mind:

1. Basins:

  • One basin: This option offers ample space to soak and wash large pots and dishes or prep large amounts of food. However, it makes it impossible to rinse dishes while the basin is full.
  • Two basins: This allows homeowners to multi-task, washing in one basin and rinsing in the other. Usually one basin is around 18 inches wide and the other is 14 inches.
  • Three basins: These typically have two large basins on either side and a smaller one in the center for the garbage disposal. This works nicely because the garbage disposal can be used separate from the rest of the sink. However, it does take up more counter space.

2. Style

  • Farmhouse: Typically, farmhouse sinks offer one basin, but they also come with two. They have a distinct apron front, giving homes a vintage feel, which many homeowners like.
  • Rounded sides: With a kitchen remodel, ease of use is important, and a sink with rounded edges is certainly easier to clean than one with square ones. This style offers a more modern look and comes in all shapes and colors.
  • Built-in drain board: This option has a built-in area for draining dishes or allowing fruits and veggies to dry after washing. The only con is that they take up more counter space.

3. Material

  • Stainless steel: Durable and easy-to-clean, stainless steel is a great modern choice.
  • Porcelain: This traditional sink material looks great in any kitchen, plus it comes in pretty much any color.
  • Granite composite: This material is difficult to destroy and doesn’t show scratches or water spots. However, if you choose a lighter color, it can stain and might require special maintenance.
