How to Choose the Best Sink for Your Bathroom

Remodeling a bathroom can create an array of mixed emotions—excitement, stress, and feeling overwhelmed are just a few that come to mind. While homeowners are often excited to tear out the old vanity and fixtures, the daunting task of picking new ones is often stressful. Luckily there aren’t as many bathroom remodel options as there are with a kitchen remodel, but homeowners often find themselves surprised at just how many decisions a bathroom remodel requires. For help tackling just one decision—the bathroom sink—read on.

There are several different styles of bathroom sinks and by narrowing down preferences to a just a few can help homeowners execute decisions in a timely manner. Here are some of those bathroom sink styles:

  • Pedestal. This is a stand-alone fixture, meaning that there is no cupboard or drawer space below. Ideal for a half bath, this option comes in many shapes and sizes and looks really great in a historic home.
  • Wall-mount. These sinks attach exactly as their name suggests: directly to the wall. They work well in small bathrooms where floor space is scarce, but just like the pedestal sink they don’t offer any storage.
  • Vessel. These come in all shapes and sizes. They are often shaped like a large bowl and sit right on top of the counter. However, they also come in rectangular and square shapes that sit lower to the counter. If a vessel sink is a must, consider the vanity height and fixture placement. The vanity should be a bit lower and the fixture will need to be taller in order to reach up over the sink.
  • Undermount. These sinks are very common. They mount under the countertop to create a seamless transition from counter to sink.
  • Drop-in. These sinks have a rim around the edge that sits on the counter. They are ideal for a remodel, as they can be retrofitted to an existing countertop.
  • Vanity top. These types of sinks are an all-in-one countertop and sink. They often come in a vanity/countertop combo set, but can also be purchased separately.
