Bathtub or Shower? How to Choose When There’s Not Room for Both

In a perfect world, all bathrooms would have a separate bathtub and shower, double vanities, heated floors, and plenty of storage space. But in reality, most bathrooms lack the space for such luxuries, so homeowners must make a decision when embarking on a bathroom remodel. If you find yourself in the position of having to choose between a bathtub and a shower in your bathroom remodel, consider the following tips.

  1. Consider usage. Who will primarily be using the bathroom? Children? Adults? Elderly? Do you need to bathe pets? These are all things to consider when making this bathroom remodel decision.
  2. Consider the draught. In case you weren’t aware, California is in an extreme draught right now.  A typical bathtub uses roughly 30 gallons of water, while a 10-minute shower uses only 25 gallons. If you install a low-flow showerhead, water usage is reduced to 20 gallons.
  3. Consider resale value. Most people would prefer to take a shower on a day-to-day basis. They tend to be more convenient and less time consuming over baths. If you were to sell your home and it only had a bathtub, this might be a major flaw to some buyers, as installing a shower could be pretty expensive. However, if your home only had a shower, this would probably not be a deal breaker. Even families with small children and babies could make a shower work for their family.
  4. Consider a combo. If you have room for a bathtub, then you have room for a bathtub/shower combination. These tend to be affordable and come in many options—from fiberglass to tile to stone.
