5 Patio Design Ideas

Even though summer is drawing to a close, us SoCal residents know that the “hot season” is far from over. That is one of the best parts of living in California—year-round summer and the ability to enjoy the outdoors for longer than in other parts of the country. Maybe you’ve been dreaming about a new patio for quite some time, but you don’t know where to start. From built-in barbecues to hardscaping to pergolas and pools, there are many factors to consider for this part of your home remodel. Read on for some helpful tips.

  1. Light it up! Outdoor lighting offers many benefits—safety along pathways, ambience, and the more functional benefit of light after the sun goes down. String some bistro lights, add a pendant light above a table or install solar lights along a walkway.
  2. Make use of the front yard. Although it is not a traditional place to include a patio, if your front yard has the space, why not? With careful planning, the front yard can become a great place to chat with your neighbors.
  3. Make it inviting. You want the patio to be a retreat, a place where you can relax after a long day, so make it appealing. Buy high quality, comfortable patio furniture with plush cushions and pillows and add a fire pit for extra ambience.
  4. Add some color. A pop of color—whether it is with turquoise pillows, pink décor, or brightly painted furniture – adds a certain liveliness to the area. Decorate with seasonally appropriate flowers and accessories that match the overall aesthetic of the home. Just be sure that the accessories you choose can withstand the outdoor elements.
  5. Include shade. It is not a secret that SoCal is known for being sunny and hot. Homeowners would be remiss to exclude some type of shade from their patio remodel. Whether you build a patio cover or add large umbrellas, shade is a must have in order to enjoy the patio.
