5 Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid

There are so many factors to consider when embarking on a kitchen remodel – countertops, cabinets and backsplash – oh my! The task of picking out each and every detail can be overwhelming. At Progressive Builders, we have seen many homeowners let that stress turn into remodeling mistakes. To help your remodel run smoothly, here are some of those mistakes to avoid.

  1. Ignoring seemingly “small” things. Don’t ignore small additions and storage features such as Lazy Susans or pull-out drawers for your pots and pans. Though they don’t seem like a big deal, they will maximize your kitchen storage space and make a huge different in the long run.
  2. Settling for less counter space. This is a huge mistake that homeowners will regret later on. If you’re already paying a hefty chunk of change for a kitchen remodel, you should really make it work for yourself and what you need. Skimping on the counter space is one thing you don’t want compromise.
  3. Adding too much open shelving. While it does give the kitchen an open and airy feel, too much open shelving can be an eyesore. Every homeowner has fun yet tacky coffee mugs, chipped serving dishes, and random cups that just don’t fit with everything else. With open shelving, the cabinets always have to be organized. If you really like the look, opt for moderate open shelving instead, perhaps in place of just one or two cabinets.
  4. Forgetting about electrical outlets. Pretty much all of your small kitchen appliances—from the Crockpot to the blender—plug into the wall. Make sure you install enough outlets to support everything.
  5. Not making space for the trash. We know that where you keep your trashcans is not the most exciting part of a kitchen remodel, but it’s certainly important. It’s a good idea to build pullouts for the trashcans – that way they are hidden yet easily accessible.

Progressive Builders is here to make sure that your kitchen remodel is everything you’ve ever dreamed, down to the very last detail. We’ll help you make sure that all of the design elements you choose coordinate well while also keeping track of small details along the way.
