3 Tips for Creating the Ideal Playroom

What’s at the top of your home remodel wish list? A stunning kitchen? Luxurious master bath? Brand new hardwood floors? If you have children, have you thought about the playroom? Providing the kids with a place that’s all their own where they can grow, learn and imagine benefits the entire family. They’ll have a place to which they can retreat for long stretches of time, and you can, well, retreat. It’s a win-win. Here are some tips to consider before embarking on that playroom remodel.

  1. Is it durable? If you have children, then you know that while they are wonderful and playful, they can also be messy and destructive. It’s usually not on purpose; exploration and curiosity are in their nature, and sometimes those qualities add an element of chaos. At any rate, you should choose finishes for your home remodel that can stand up to children. Think painting the walls with a paint that can easily be wiped down, indoor/outdoor fabric that is bright and colorful yet resilient, and perhaps a chalkboard paint wall so that the mess has some boundaries.
  2. Does it have purpose? There are lots of great design ideas out there in the blogosphere, but before implementing one, consider its purpose. Add a table for coloring and crafting, but also make sure that there is enough floor space for them to pull out their blocks and puzzles. Consider designating “zones” in different parts of the room: a reading nook, a crafting corner, an empty wall for displaying artwork, or a sensory play station.
  3. Is it functional? You know what kids come with? A whole lot of stuff, and it seems to multiply as they grow. When designing your playroom, make sure there is ample storage. Organize crafts with small containers or buckets so that little hands can find them and return them to their spot. Purchase nice, durable shelves or cubbies to store toys and games. Consider open shelving as children are more likely to play with things that they can see and retrieve themselves.

As you embark on your home remodel, make sure you consider your children. Not just for them, but for yourself as well. If the kids are happy and content, then mom and dad will be, too.
