3 Things to Consider When Starting a Living Room Remodel

When embarking upon a home remodel, many homeowners don’t really consider the living room to be a major remodel. After all, it’s basically just walls and a fireplace, right? Yes and no. It’s certainly not the same undertaking as a kitchen or bathroom remodel. However, there are still some factors specific to the living room that should be taken into consideration.

  1. Know your limits. Even though it seems simple, homeowners shouldn’t assume that they know how to remodel the living room. Before starting, determine what skills are needed to complete the project and whether or not you have them. If not, hire a contractor. The skills needed will vary depending on the scope of the project. Do you plan to install new flooring, trim, doors, and paint? Or do you plan on knocking down walls and putting up new ones? The level of expertise needed is entirely dependent upon these things.
  2. Don’t underestimate the cost. Even though you might meticulously calculate the cost of materials and labor, it seems that there is always something that either goes wrong or needs adjusting with a home remodel. Add a 10% buffer into your budget. That way when something does come up—like an outlet having to be moved or some tile needing to be replaced—you’ll be prepared for it.
  3. Be realistic about the time frame. DIYers often think they can get a big (or small!) project done in a weekend. While this certainly isn’t impossible given the right circumstances, it’s not entirely realistic. Sure, an experienced contractor might be able to get a minor living room remodel done in a weekend, but even that is pushing it. When taking into consideration flooring, doors, trim, paint, lighting, furniture and decorating, it’s nearly impossible to finish a complete transformation in a weekend.
