Updated Interior Doors

Replacing outdated interior doors is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to give your home an instant upgrade. Homeowners may not realize it, but there are many types of interior doors in the home: bedroom, bathroom, bedroom closet, hall closet, pantry, sliding glass doors…the list goes on and on, as do the options for each. How is a homeowner to choose? And what about door installation? Read on for some expert door installation and style tips.

  • Pocket doors. These are popular for those with small spaces as they are, by nature, space savers. They slide into a “pocket” in the wall when not needed, but can be pulled out when needed. They are available in all shapes and sizes.
  • Mirrored doors. Popular in bedrooms, mirrored doors add light and dimension to a space. Plus, homeowners will be able to see their look from head to toe before leaving the house.
  • Medium-density fiberboard (MDF). MDF is an engineered wood product that is made from binders and recycled wood fiber. Its very nature makes it moldable, so it can be found in virtually any shape, size, and style. Plus, because MDF doors are not solid wood, they are cost effective.
  • Salvaged doors. A very popular option right now, vintage-looking, salvaged doors add a touch of elegance to a home. Salvage yards typically have a great selection of old doors. The only catch is that you might have to scrape off many layers of paint to get just the right look.

But what about door installation? How homeowners decide to go about this is entirely dependent on their budget and level of expertise. Pre-hung doors are available at any hardware store and are a cost-effective option. They come with jambs and hinge hardware, which certainly takes some of the guesswork out for homeowners. However, they still have to be hung straight and require ripping out and replacing the casing around the door.
