Tips for Installing Crown Molding

Crown molding can go virtually anywhere in a home. From kitchens to bathrooms to home offices, it definitely gives a home that “finished” look. It adds value to a home just like granite countertops and hardwood floors. It makes even the smallest of rooms seem taller and creates a nice break between the walls and ceiling. But for almost any DIYer, installing crown molding seems daunting. The cuts and angles are difficult to make, and if done imperfectly, it’s quite obvious. On the other hand, having it installed by a professional will make sure it’s done right. Here are some tips Progressive Builders follows to make sure your crown molding looks great.

  1. Choose the right saw. A power miter saw and stand offer a quick and accurate way to make cuts. Buy a 10- or 12-inch saw with a dust collection bag or exhaust port for a wet/dry vacuum. The stand should have extendable arms to support the length of the molding. Keep in mind that these tools are not cheap and can cost over $500 for both of them.
  2. Cut it “upside down.” Most trim carpenters will tell you that the most efficient way to cut crown molding is by holding it so that it looks like it’s in its final installed position. To accomplish this, turn the molding “upside down” so that the edge that will touch the ceiling is on the saw bed and the edge that will touch the wall is on the saw’s fence. Leaving the blade perpendicular to the bed, all you need to do is make 45 or 22.5-degree miters.
  3. Buy a crown-molding jig. The problem with the upside down method is that you have to keep it positioned at the correct angle while lining up the cut. Keeping in mind that you will have several feet of material to manage, a jig could be helpful. It will help ensure that each piece is at the exact same angle when cut. This removes much of the headache.

Sound confusing? It can be. That’s why we always recommend having a professional install your crown molding. The money is worth the time and headache you’ll avoid by hiring a professional. Contact Progressive Builders today to get started with your crown molding installation project!
