3 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Kitchen Backsplash

When it comes to a kitchen remodel, the design options are limitless. From stainless steel appliances to Carrera marble countertops, there is no shortage of possibilities. Usually homeowners are pretty set about the cabinet color, countertop material, and appliance finish that they want. When it comes to backsplashes, however, they seem to get stuck. Here are a few questions to ask when choosing a backsplash for your kitchen remodel:

  1. Do you want a statement or something subtler? A backsplash does precisely what its name implies: it protects the walls from splashes (namely kitchen grease and water). However, unlike its friend the countertop, it doesn’t need to accommodate hot plates, sharp knives, and food prep. This makes the backsplash choice one that is mostly based on design preference. First decide what you’re going for: statement or subtle? Next, compare it to your countertop. They shouldn’t compete with each other; so if the countertop is busy or colorful, opt for a subtle backsplash. Finally, pick the backsplash that you like best!
  2. Where will the backsplash go? Generally a backsplash covers the space between the kitchen countertops and the upper cabinets. It might encompass the entire length of the kitchen or be confined to one small, rectangular area. Is there an area where you have no upper cabinets and the backsplash will reach to the ceiling? These are all options to consider when choosing a backsplash.
  3. How much can you spend? Budget, budget, budget. A sad but necessary truth in a kitchen remodel. However, knowing how much you can (or want to) spend can really help whittle down the options. If you’re on a tight budget, consider white ceramic tiles, which are classic and never go out of style. They come in all shapes and sizes, so you can add interest with the pattern. If you like a higher-end look and want marble, keep in mind that it is much more affordable as tile rather than a slab.
